Moving from an inquiry on the notions of time underlying strategy studies, in this paper we lay the groundwork for the elaboration of a multitemporal view of the firm. We draw on the Austrian process view in economic studies and on Nonaka's idea of synthesising capabilities to formulate a methodological framework which consents the elaboration of a multitemporal view of the resource-based firm, in which different time concepts are bridged and main actor behaviours crucial for prolonged firm success are encompassed. Towards a routine-based view of interfirm rivalry

Although organizational routines have attracted increasing attention in strategy and organization research, they have received surprisingly limited attention in competitive dynamics scholarship. Our essay seeks to advance a routine-based view of interfirm rivalry by bridging the competitive dynamics and routine literatures. We analyze the role of Private Equity firms (PE-Firms) as a governance mechanism, focusing on their role as social intermediaries, helping their portfolio companies to form alliances and thereby spurring entrepreneurial growth. Alliances as long term inter-firm cooperations are considered to be a main source of firm-innovation. External growth via alliances is especially important for small to medium sized companies (SME) – largely dominant in Europe (up to 99%)–, because their internal resources are limited.
